don't know how i got out of middle school without reading this or watching the movie but here we are. I always thought ponyboy was the one to die so i was looking out for that. then when Johnny died my nurse brain kicked in and was like maybe he'll have residual effects from the fire and smoke inhalation but he made it. I was glad that the three brothers made up and became closer at the end that made my heart happy lol.

It's been a long time since I've seen the film, but it was always a favourite. Turns out the Francis Ford Coppola adaptation is incredibly faithful to the book so it was like watching the film again. The cast was so perfect that I could see them in every scene.

The novel goes on a bit longer than the film to include the court day and a moment of resolution for the brothers. Also Cherry doesn't feature much compared to the film.

I don't know how this was received at the time, but I'm guessing the lives of poor kids from the wrong side of the tracks didn't usually feature in literature back then.

It feels like an authentic insight into those lives. It's so sad and poignant with really great characters.

I'm not surprised it's the bestselling YA of all time, probably helped by being on school reading lists across the USA.

Written before YA was created as a marketing term, this novel happily sits between Rebel Without a Cause and Catcher in the Rye as a window into teenage angst and survival against the odds.

I read this book in middle school, and we all fell in love with Ponyboy and his friends. How can you not fall in love with the boys of the greasers gang? A rough story about growing up and growing up not in the best conditions. Ponyboy doesn’t have the best family, but he was trying to grow despite that. A touching story while I grew up, that my classmates still quote, “Stay gold, Ponyboy, stay gold.”
