Thank you to Rebecca Hefner for allowing me to read a copy of this book. I loved this story. It gripped me by the neck with its fangs (all the puns intended) and had me wanting more and more. The story and the romance were just wonderfully written. And reading the prequel helped me imagine the world better while reading this. And the politics within this world is just so good and was one of the things that made me want more and more of this story. Definitely recommend this series for any fantasy romance and fantasy reader out there.

The End of Hatred
Etherya's Earth, Book 1
By: Rebecca Hefner
Narrated by: Devon Wilcox

I am not normally a listener of pnr, but there are a few authors that write pnr that I truly enjoy. Rebecca Hefner is one of them. Why? Because her stories are all encompassing. This first book in Etherya's Earth lets us meet Miranda. A strong warrior, she plans on taking over the Slayers when her father's reign is over. But he doesn't think a woman can do it. Mistake #1!!! This character is fierce. She knows what is good for her people and is tired of war. When she meets Sathen, King of the Vampyres, and their enemies, she finds out he feels the same way! Can this new way of thought bring peace? The Demons are going to do what they can to stop it! Will the Slayers accept Miranda's new ways? Do the Vampyres really want peace? This story packs it all in. The politics of war, the long held grudges, the need of dependence on each other, the common enemy and a romance that grows through the story, I was captivated and kept on the edge til the end. I love this world building, and I can't wait to hear what is going to happen next!

Devon Wilcox is the narrator and he has a huge array of characters to portray! He finds voices for them all and tells us this story with all the feelings. He created this world with anger, frustration and hate adding in hesitation, and love. It's a good story telling.

Absolutely loved this book! This paranormal romance series is off to a fantastic start! I’ve read the prequel and the first book and already feel like this is something I’d re-reading!

The spin on the paranormal elements of this series is highly appreciated, I absolutely love a unique take on these things!

The world-building is absolutely wonderful, the characters and their development enthralling, and the story will fill you with an overall sense of urgency and warm your heart.

The series has some serious feminist undertones in a way that makes you cheer on the heroines and love the sexy alpha overprotective heroes that much more!

Even if you don’t read the prequel, this first book is an amazing start to the series and I’m so excited to start the next book!

I was fortunate enough to receive an advanced reader copy from BookSirens and I happily and voluntarily leave this honest review.

I got this book free for an unbiased view from voracious readers.

The book sounded great from the blurb so I looked forward to reading it and I was definitely not disappointed. I enjoyed that although there are humans in it they're not the main part of the story but it features more around the vampires and slayers. The story flowed so well that I didn't realise how long I'd been reading until I looked at the clock well after midnight! The hero isn't Sathan but Princess Miranda, this makes such a refreshing change to have a strong male lead but a female heroine who takes charge. I loved the interaction between Sathan and his siblings, hopefully I'll get to know them in future books.

If you want a change from the usual vampire books I'd definitely give this a read.

I hate Miranda! She’s an awful person for most of the book. She’s a bigot, and a bitch. Other characters say she’s funny, but other than some (very) outdated references to Pop culture, she didn’t say anything intelligent, let alone witty or funny. Also, at some point, she says she supports the decision of her father to order their soldiers to commit suicide rather than feed the Vampyres. What?! So these bigots would rather go extinct than admit they were wrong? Because it was them who started the war! And the “godess” is mad at the Vampyres for fighting back? It seemed Vampyres got the short stick, and it was covered in shit, yet everyone else acts as if they’re the villains. Sathan and his people deserved an apology from everyone. She doesn’t begin to question that narrative until 50% in, and doesn't acknowledge that Sathan might be a victim too until close to 70%. She’s the worst ruler ever to rule her kingdom (the previous two weren't very good either), doesn't listen to advice and isn't the brightest bulb (I mean, I knew Darkrip was her brother from the start, but she doesn't figure it out, someone has to spell it for her).
Sathan was OK, until the author decided to make him do something very stupid and totally out of character to introduce some tension.
Miranda's father changes personalities as the plot needed him to, so one chapter he's a distant father, another he's a fanatical bigot, later he's a power-hungry madman, and the next chapter he's supportive and understanding. The first three I would think might be considered a character arc, with increasingly bad behavior pointing to him becoming a tragic villain, even when it felt too convenient at times, but that last change... Made no sense for that character arc and made me think the whole thing was just for plot convenience.
Overall, it was entertaining, the writing is Ok. I've read two novellas from this author before, in this same universe, and I liked those. It's the characters I can't stand in this one.

A Common Goal

Rebecca Hefner Etherya's Earth bk 01 The End of Hatred

The characters are plentiful with almost as many POVs as the story of how Vampyre King Sathan and Slayer Princess Miranda cut a new course for both of their species. Truthfully, I could see this as being a movie or TV series with the way it was laid out.

There are many twists, turns, and betrayals. Some I saw coming, some I didn't. I liked it more than I expected. The introduction of so much human technology caught me off guard, but it was blended in interesting ways.

As for the ending, it was sizzling, playful, and highly entertaining. The "blood sucker" and his little warrior make quite the pair!

DNF at 17%. There are too many inconsistencies and the FMC’s plan makes no sense whatsoever to me. I liked the multiple POVs but if I’m that annoyed with the plot this early on, I’m out. These are the notes I made while reading:

I don’t understand Miranda’s grand plan for peace because ultimately she wants to kill the vampyre king, and I don’t see how that is going to work out into a peaceful resolution of the conflict

This is from Kenden‘s point of view after Miranda has left. he says he wants to make sure that his soldiers keep her safe. How? He stayed behind and she left so he has no way to do that.

The father daughter conflict seems contrived after a 1000 years to work on the relationship. that should’ve blown up way sooner. And there is absolutely no reason whatsoever why she would keep the creepy birthday presents from him. she tried to tell him once and he wouldn’t listen but I’m pretty sure she would have had every opportunity to tell him over the last 1000 years. Also, it seems pretty shitty to me to deny him The peace of mind that she felt when she got to bury at least, well, pieces of her mother. He was her husband after all.

One more inconsistency, now we’re in Miranda’s point of view when she is leaving the compound, and she received a note from Kenden and from its content it’s clear that it’s written after his conversation with the king, which makes no sense because she was already gone when the two of them talked.

WOW!! What a surprise author and read!! The End of Hatred was a new series to me and Rebecca respectively a new author. I’m always willing to give new authors a try and I’m so glad I took the chance with her!! The End of Hatred is paranormal fantasy that stands out from the rest because of the world that was built for the characters. The goddess Etherya created a world with different races to live in and it leads to conflicts and romance and all out war. I don’t want to spoil it but that’s the main idea you’ll get when you read it!
Now onto characters!! Their are soooooooo many great characters with great character development. Each character was fleshed out and some I ended up really growing to love, ones I thought were bad ended up having the most heart! I would so definitely recommend this book for fantasy paranormal lovers new and old!!! It’s a fabulous story that’s only the beginning!!!!
