Rebecca Stead is back at it again. She's one of those authors who I read every new release sight unseen. I went into this one totally cold and loved it. At one point, it started to feel a little too convenient, but then she didn't hesitate to muddy the waters again before the end. I still think When You Trap a Tiger is my Newbery pick, but this one will definitely be in the conversation.

I’m pretty sure I cried through the entire second half. This little book had so much good stuff packed into about anxiety and feelings, forgiveness, acceptance and family. It was so simply said and yet, it was said in such a beautiful way through incredible story telling. This one will stay with me for a very long time.

What a sweet read. Also, starting an Uncle Frank appreciation club. Our slogan is “Uncle Frank: the Real MVP”.

I was utterly charmed by this book. Bea is such a genuine, flawed character and so, so relatable. It covers a lot of ground--Bea sees a therapist because of anxiety, anger and impulsiveness issues, she is a bad speller, she has eczema. There are a couple of instances of homophobia. But there are a ton of loving, supportive people around her and it is such a warm and hopeful book. The only thing that struck me is that sometimes the voice feels a tad young for a twelve-year-old.

This is my latest addition to the “books everyone should read” list. Adults too! Even though parents may divorce and date and marry again, Bea’s mom and dad maintain, we’re still a family. Things just look different. I loved every character in this book and their positive, active co-parenting, the benefits of therapy, and advocacy of the many kinds of family. Good times and tough times, love is love is love.
