I enjoyed this poignant, touching novel about a boy whose family is thrown for a devastating loop after the unexpected death of his father. Although it deals with some tough issues—grief, alcoholism, homelessness, financial struggle, etc.—overall it's a hopeful, empowering book. It teaches great lessons about friendship, embracing your talents, accepting help when needed, and working toward a goal. It's a quick read but an affecting one.

Man! These children's books don't mess around! Isaiah and his family are facing loss, grief, homelessness, and substance abuse. Isaiah is a writer but he's struggling to find the right words in the midst of trying to provide for his family. He is incredibly courageous, a true hero. His moxie and determination are inspiring, and his side hustles are all really fun to follow.

What a great debut middle grades novel. It takes some very difficult issues that kids have to deal with in real life. The emotional depth of Isaiah's character is compelling . Etihad liked to learn more about Angel however.

*In exchange for an honest review, I received an early release e-copy courtesy of Random House Children's and NetGalley.com.

I loved this book.⁣

Isaiah Dunn is a writer. ⁣

A poet.⁣

A superhero.⁣

This is such a sweet story about 10 year Isaiah who is learning how to navigate life without his dad. ⁣

I loved how so many adults in his life supported his interests and looked out for his well-being.⁣

His relationship with the barber is soooooo sweet. I may or may not have teared up reading one of their interactions.
