This was such a great read! Not totally surprised since this is an Alex Liddell book but seriously I loved it. Sam is quite the heroine, a foster kid, now an adult given a tough choice - prison or 4 years at a reformatory academy. With someone depending on her she takes the shorter sentence but ends up discovering some eye opening truths about herself and the world. The world isn't fully human and she isn't either. Sadly for her she's a hated "species". At the academy she finds herself drawn to 4 males who have quite a bit of a past together. So much to unpack, so many secrets to unravel, so many players to watch.

One of my favorite things about Alex's writing is the character development and the relationships between the characters. This book was no exception. I've become invested in Sam, her survival, her growth and finding the power within. I can't wait to see how she owns this world and the males. I'm also excited to see how her individual relationships will blossom as well as the group dynamic. That ending certainly left me wanting more though. Completely worth picking up.

The fact that this was my 325th book of the year (the same amount as I read total last year) makes me sad. I wish it was a better book.

The book was rather boring, with very little happening. The storyline could have been so much more and I was really disappointed. I almost gave up many times.

I must admit, at first, I didn't really get on board with the whole setup :( But I trusted the author since I love her other books... and yes, I did come to enjoy reading it and at the end, I was even genuinely sad the next part wasn't out yet.

Worldbuilding was good, there was just enough of info going around to get our bearings. We moved around a lot, getting a feel for the academy and the immediate surroundings.

Character development was decent. I think my main issue is that Sam is taking it all pretty damn well. I mean, not only does she find out there is a whole supernatural world out there, she finds out she's not the person she thought she was. She gets carted off to an academy, probably not seeing the person most important to her for a long while... This felt like a missed opportunity to get to know Sam more, get some insight into her past etc since even in the end we know very little about her :(
As for the men, I must admit, I'm not sold on Ellis. While the other men do seem to have some interesting potential, I'm curious how it will continue to evolve.

Pacing and flow were really good. Once you got started it pretty much got your undivided attention till the end (goodbye sleep lol). But yeah, good balance between all the action and conversations, which kept the story moving forward without too much hassle.

I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy of this book and all in all I liked it! While I know this is 'another' academy series, it's an easy and enjoyable read from start to finish. Looking forward to the next instalment!

Story was okay. Have a lot of questions. I can’t imagine being told I’m a witch out of no where and thrown to the wolves. Literally. The guys are ehhhh except Cassis is giving very Casanova vibes. Literally nothing happened between Ellis and Sam for him to start falling in love. I don’t like that their first time was under duress. I’m all for forced proximity but they were never on the brink of more before being trapped.

A few misspelled words. I don’t like the going backs d girth between first and third person.

Not sure if I like this story or not. I do like Sam. She’s a pretty strong character. I’m just not sure yet.
