This picks up right where the first book ended. There’s very little recap (which I am grateful for) and it sets up to conclude the plot threads woven in the first book.

I felt like this book moved much slower than the first one. In the beginning I appreciated that as Tullia is recovering from torture but as it progresses to the “action” points I found it a little tedious to get through. I was surprised by the twist and thought Arvin’s redemption arc was decently done, even if I personally wouldn’t have been as forgiving as Tullia.

The chemistry between the leads was still just as enjoyable as it was in the first book and watching Tullia come into her own was well done. I appreciated the author for not making her a fantasy typically badass. Tullia’s character is not a “fighter” but rather a people person. She goes through the basics to learn how to defend herself but for the most part sticks to utilizing her magic and becoming more politically savvy as the book progresses. She’s not a badass fantasy heroine but she is a really enjoyable character to read and her journey of healing and self discovery was really well done.
