Not a big book but wonderfully enjoyable. I really enjoy Mortimer's creation -' Rumpole' is like Woodhouse's 'Jeeves and Wooster' - an institution and a great one at that.
All the important characteristics of the best fiction are to be found in the Rumpole books - superb characterisation, blistering dialogue (phrases from the books have entered the English language and are used in every day speech) and storylines which truly hold your interest. Add to these the humour which pervades every page and you have a READING EXPERIENCE!!

DNF at 25%.

Oh, I'm not having much luck with books recently.

I liked this in parts, but it quickly became apparent to me that I should be more familiar with the characters to understand the plot.

This is something I actually would like to get back to if I ever watch the series or read the earlier books.

The definitive source book for the Rumpole series. But it should never be read before all or most of the other Rumpole tales are inhaled. This explains all! but context is sweet. As a retired criminal defense lawyer (US) I can completely identify with young Rumpole's experience even though in a legal system so different than ours. What comes through is that the push of social pressure is pretty much the same over there as over here and also that there are those who seek justice and will pursue it through this resistance. The fear of the obligation placed on the lawyer is underestimated by almost all of society. Rumpole, notwithstanding his ego, still tells that story.
