I’m a huge musical theatre fan though I’m yet to read Gaston Leroux’s original novel. I found this emoji version very funny and I loved the way the characters spoke to each other. It was a nice way to quickly read the story though I did have to keep going back to the character list to remember what their emoji looked like. I have this 3 stars just because I personally wouldn’t go out of my way to buy it as it is certainly a gimmick and also there were a few characters etc that I don’t know as they aren’t in the musical and I do feel that most people would pick this up instead of the actual book, but saying that it still would be great for a secret Santa gift for the theatre lover in your life,

Well, honestly, I didn't like it because of the emojis. I picked this book up, because I like the Phantom of the Opera. Parts of it were funny, and you really do need to know the story in order to understand the humor. I laughed at a few parts. In all, there are only so many emoijis you can use, and this book used the same ones over and over again. I think the emoji they used most often was the poop. Really? Poop is that funny? Clearly, this book is not meant for me. Others may enjoy it.

I received a copy of this book as a part of a Goodreads giveaway. Overall, I thought this was a really well done, shortened version of the long narrative of The Phantom of the Opera. The authors did a great job of staying true to the original story while updating the text and story line to make it more believable via texting and emails. Even though I think realistically people would not use as many emojis as were used in this book (just for sake of efficiency and the fast pace of events), I do get why there were so many emojis. I thought the little character emojis they created were cute, but honestly I did have to keep referencing the front of the book to remember who was part of each conversation. It might have been easier to just have names instead of those little detailed emoji faces. Also a bit nitpicky, the lack of page numbers or marked chapters was noticeable. I read this in one sitting but if I hadn't and had wanted to mark what page I was on, I would have to have a physical bookmark instead of just noting a page number of chapter number, since those things weren't noted. Overall, I thought the quality of the book was fantastic, the little poster inside is very cute, and found this to be a fun, fast read. I would recommend this to individuals already familiar with the original story or movie, just because without that context, some of this might have not made sense.

I received an e-arc copy of the following via Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.

Several of my friends are OBSESSED with Phantom of the Opera. I know the story, I've heard the musical, and I STILL found this a confusing mess to follow along with. I usually love retellings, but this one tried to tell the story exactly, with every characters, with very few words, and a mix of emoji pictogram and text message. Emoji's for each character were given a name in the beginning, but never referred to by name again, only by picture, and as I read this on Adobe Editions, it made it very hard to follow as I couldn't flip back and forth. I sort of loathe the emoji-everting craze, so I probably should have expected this. I didn't really get all the way through it, just skimmed to the end. You may like it if you like these sorts of emoji-story things, but I didn't. It is really nice visually, and its certainly creative, I'll give that.
