Of all the Flamingo Rampant books, I think this is the one that has the most classic picture book format. Bell is having a birthday party! Who comes to the door, and what do they bring? It's a counting book: FOUR bottles of homemade soda (FIZZ! POP! POP!), FIVE seedlings to plant. (GROW! GROW!), a rainbow flag with SIX colours (SWISH! SWISH!). It doesn't have a plot, it just shows this giant, diverse, queer family. Kids may miss that Bell goes by "they" pronouns. The room fills with people with different gender presentations, skin tones, and body shapes. The illustrations have lots of little details to spot--I actually didn't notice until re-reading it that the bunting changes every page to match the numbers. This is an "incidentally queer" picture book that shows a diverse queer family without having to explain it. I think there is a lot of potential for re-reads, too, because of the small changes on each page. What does the poster say now? How many bees are on this page? Can you find all seven cats on this one? How many rainbows can you spot? Very cute.
