A convoluted tale of family, ambition and entitlement. How far will power go to spread itself and how different are the systems that we think oppose each other

This book was simultaneously too long and too short. It could’ve been a series of 3 novels, but I understand that not every author has the luxury of deciding that type of book deal. There are many enjoyable parts of this book, including the main themes, the questions it leaves you with, and the existential feeling that it taps into. I absolutely adored the author’s writing style. Her descriptions of food made me salivate and need to go get a snack haha. I did like that the author didn’t give you an easy answer to the big questions, but I do wish that she tied up a few loose ends with the plot. The book ended on a type of dissatisfying cliff-hanger that made me wish for one more chapter! Ugh!

Book is a 3 but the lower review is specific to the audiobook. There was an odd narrator switch that was a weird tone choice in the last two-ish hours.

As for the book, it’s written well and I’ve read a previous book by this author that I enjoyed. I like her writing style in general but this was felt like it needed about 100 pages edited. The first third was drawn out for what it did and often felt like description, ok another description, etc without buildup. Never really felt  attached to any of the characters and even thought the concept was interesting, it just didn’t have much impact.
