I don't really know how to feel about this one. It discusses generational trauma and how they all vowed not to be traumatized or traumatize the next in line, but they all ended up doing it anyways. With everything that happened, it felt like they were all still ashamed to be Chinese, never accepted themselves positively, and still yearned to be white American, and as Chinese American, that just felt icky.
Idk, it just felt like it didn't dive into Asian diaspora in a meaningful, constructive or positive way. It never took a turn to have the characters be prideful of their history or become better communicators of what they experienced to come together. To me, it felt like they were all still shameful and weren't going to change their ways.
Plus, there was so much random stuff that happened that never really contributed to the story because it was all very surface level. Like Lily and Matthew's relationship was boring, Nick in college was just him doing actions but not reflecting on them, May's life was interesting but it was too much science speak and just her recounting the actions of her life. It wasn't reflective, nor connected in meaningful ways.

I liked the way the author explored the themes of destiny & agency, but it seemed to lose momentum in the third part.
