Initially another poor girl meets rich boy storyline, Khong develops a multigenerational plot that brings more to the reader. Threads of deception are revealed, while intertwining the science of genetics, the Cultural Revolution, and class and latent racism in America.

I felt like the novel strengthened as it unfolded, with Mei’s time in China as its most convincing portion.

5 for cultural/historical perspective; 3 for story movement/plot design.
