Read this for a college course (Social Studies in the Elementary Schools).
Middle Grade Historical Fiction
It was a very heavy story, especially in the beginning. Charlotte faced so much. The ending was well deserved and hard won. I can see why this would be a great book to read in 5th grade during the expanding west unit.
Powerful message on persistence and seeking your dreams.
So many elements of this book that I enjoyed. Sleeping in the lofts, the stage coaching, and Charlotte tipping her hat saying, “may the best man win.”
The MVPs of the story: Vern and Ebeneezer.
Mrs. Boyle was evil.
