I love the simplicity of this book - the instructions are clear in a way I haven’t really seen before. And the hackable part of the patterns is my favorite.

How To Sew Clothes is a stellar guide for beginners to garment making, or those brand new to sewing in general. The book is filled with beautiful photographs, and the overall aesthetic is very clean, simple, and appealing with minimalistic vibes.

This book is coauthored by two people who own an indie pattern company together, and turned their experiences and knowledge into a very thorough how to guide. I like that they keep it incredibly simple, not overwhelming the reader with a lot of extra fluff, or advanced techniques, or unfamiliar terminology that is not yet useful to a beginner. That premise has resulted in a very attainable guide that hopefully will not scare beginner sewists from ever beginning the satisfying craft of sewing their own clothes.

The author's views on pattern hacking is also very interesting, and includes many concrete examples of ways to transform a seemingly simple pattern into something else that may appeal to the reader better. A handful of patterns are enclosed in the back, along with instructions inside thoroughly taking the reader through the construction step-by-step. Patterns include a boxy top with short or long sleeves, cardigans with varying closures and fronts, and also bags of many sizes.
