Much more about music than I was expecting, but it’s lovely seeing Fisher discuss something he’s so passionate about.

The subtitile and introduction make this book seem like it’s a collection of personal essays, but it’s really essays on media analysis of varies examples of music and film. The connection between hauntology and many of the albums that were the subject of these essays was hard to follow, and I’m not sure I agreed with most of his takes on rave music in general, but maybe that’s because it’s not my preferred listening genre. Overall, a very challenging book for me to get through, I haven’t read something in a long time where I also have to have a dictionary open, which in its own way was refreshing.

I think I would have enjoyed this considerably more if I had even a passing interest in rave culture. Some of the articles where very interesting, particularly the introduction. But a lot just didn't hit for me. It did introduce me to a couple of artists and records i'd never considered before, but found myself skipping over quite a few of the articles in the last 2 thirds.

It's pretty great and very prescient in parts, but overall it's references are too esoteric to get many of the points across. When it hits, it hits hard, but CP is the more focused, more accessible and more concise read.

Kind of skipped the parts where he talks about stuff I do not care about. A little samey but the central thesis is super interesting so that’s okay. RIP the big man

can’t help but wish there were more of a discussion of depression/politicized mental health but maybe i need to pop a zoloft and read capitalist realism
