For such a short read it was very engaging and seemingly had more depth than longer books I've read. I'm also hooked for the other books in the series now.

I want to know more about the clerics and divine in this world. I also hope we get the meet the new empress.

Also I didn't understand at first....until the end when I finally did. As I think we were supposed to. Excellent prose.

This was a really beautifully written novella. The world was sparse yet at the same time felt rich and full, like there is much more to be discovered and explored in future additions. I was very impressed by the ease of world building, especially after reading some particularly dense fantasy novels where I still felt uncertain about the world hundreds of pages in. Very much looking forward to the next in the series.

if you were, like me, drawn to the 2-hour audiobook, beware! this is an audiobook that requires you to pay close attention. i listened first with my spouse, and then immediately relistened alone and i was amazed at how much i missed.

but if you dedicate to this book the attention it's worth, it pays off. as far as high fantasy goes, this was top notch.

Such a beautiful story and writing style! And it was such a lovely representation of culture. I marked it down a star because there were a few editing mistakes, and a couple of sections where I had to reread parts 3-4 times to understand what was trying to be portrayed. But overall, I loved this novella, and I’d definitely love to read more by Nghi Vo.
