A beautiful, but saddening,  portrayal of family life and dynamics. This book covers issues relating to racism, parental expectations, societal expectations and the harm that can come from everything we fail to communicate. A beautifully written book, well suited to readers who like fully developed and relatable characters.

Oof. This was a heavy read. The content is very dark and I found the family dynamics hard to read about as I just felt so awful for the kids. Really goes to show the trickle-down effects of parents not dealing with their own issues and then putting said issues on their children. VERY sad read but extremely beautiful writing. I’m excited to read more by Celeste Ng.

This is a beautiful portrait of family relationships and grief. I really enjoyed the back and forth in time and the way things were slowly revealed. I found myself resonating with aspects of each of the siblings' experiences in particular: the way Nath felt overshadowed and overlooked;  the pressure to try to hold a family together placed on Lydia; the quite, unseen, observation of Hannah.

And oof, this book is the kind of sad that is so so beautiful.
To know that Lydia was trying to start things anew, believing that all she needed to do was kick and try. To know all they was trying to do was trust in herself and prove that she can exist on her own terms, and then to be met with the void. And for none of the family to ever really know how much she was trying to start over. And how much she, in the end, allowed space for her family to start anew, to break out of the patterns they were stuck in. She accomplished what she had been hoping for her family, in the most tragic of ways.
Be prepared for tears if you are someone who often cries at books.

Here I am grieving for the life that Lydia could never lived up to. Here I am loss of words because of how heart wrenching this was.
The first line of the book is "Lydia is dead. They don't know this yet" & you would think it's such an obvious thing, so you wouldn't cry over this book. Bold of me to assume the same cuz I did not expect THAT at all. I thought this would be end up being a murder mystery, but instead it just pulled all the heart strings of mine & made me feel so heartbroken. Maybe being relatable to the characters & their situations made things way worse. At the end, I didn't get the ending I wanted. I didn't get the answers for the questions I had. Most of the things I expected didn't end up happening. But that was the beautiful thing about this. Because life is like that. Life doesn't gives you the perfect ending & the closure to everything. Most of the time we just end up with bunch of questions we don't even know what to do with. I love that. It makes this story feel so close to the heart. I didn't cry yet but my heart feels so heavy so I might end up crying after finish writing this. Who knows? However read the trigger warnings & be prepared with a tissue box beforehand.
