"...I figure if there's a way to fight darkness, it's with light." The Darkness is a horror book full of hope and perseverance. It takes inspiration from King's The Mist and Under the Dome, but the particular brand of claustrophobia and panic that I got from The Darkness reminded me much more of all of our experiences with COVID-19 lockdowns. To me, this book is a beautiful reflection on one of our own darker times. Hutchins really nails his characters, making the time spent with them very enjoyable. While I would have enjoyed more of the eldritch horrors, the ambiguity and vagueness work well here. Hutchins is a skilled and succinct writer, and I look forward to reading more of his work (and his characters) in the future.
