This book was a more-than-worthy addition to The Land of Stories canon. Goldilocks is everything you want in a heroine and more, and her crew is the best.
The graphic novel expands the lore of the series to explain the backstory of some of the characters absent from the main six books like Pinocchio and Little Miss Muffet, both of whom were unforgettable characters with badass fighting skills. “No more Little Miss Nice Muffet!” She is the spider goddess! At times the drawings seemed a little bit awkward, but that is probably inevitable with any graphic novel. Hagetta, Goldilocks’s adopted mother, has a fascinating character dynamic with her foster daughter, and is so sassy and enjoyable to read. A little bit of magic here and there was always welcome. The book is also interesting in that it takes place more or less a year or so (give or take a few months) before the events of The Wishing Spell, because the Fairy Godmother (Brystal Evergreen) is noticeably absent from the Happily Ever After Assembly meeting because her son (John Bailey) has just passed away. It also shows a different, eviler side of the Charming brothers contrary to what the main books (and our myths surrounding these figures) present. The misfit and feminist themes that pervade the novel through Goldilocks’s defense of her home, the Charming brothers’ desire to salvage the Dwarf Forests and execute its inhabitants, and the final confrontation between the three queens and their husbands
is more of the beautiful magic we’ve come to associate with Chris Colfer.
Will you stand with Goldilocks?
