I loved this book when I was younger, but rereading it, I didn't really like the portrayal of Nigeria in the book. So many sentences started with "In my country.." and ended with broad, sweeping generalisations as if Nigeria is limited to Lagos alone. I'm not saying any of those generalisations are false but come on...
I loved the progression of the story although it was a bit hard to read at times and took me a while to finish.

A finely tuned narrative about female empowerment in a country that has its share of patriarchy and corrupt government. It is strongest in its details of a furious friendship between the narrator Enitan and Sheri, but the details of Nigeria's history that come throughout are wonderfully informative. This book provides a perspective western audiences should seek out. A powerful female character challenges the status quo while dealing with all manner of conflicts. Atta's complicated relationship with Nigeria made me want to go there despite all the flaws. So many incredible and rich characters populate this book.
