I hate that this was abridged but I couldn't find any other unabridged copies from my lie buries. I don't understand if this was a business type self help book or memoir or a book of fiction. It sure didn't seem like fiction.

Self-serving (Marcinko is awesome at everything and God's gift to the world), misogynist (all the women in the book are either incompetent bitches or ball-busting shrews who outwardly hate Richard but secretly want to fuck him) and gross, this was so awful I couldn't finish it.

Interesting but I kind of hate the storyteller. Says "pus-nuts" a ton. He's a super rebel and whatnot but I got tired of him. Took way longer to read than expected because I just got bored. This seems to be a theme for military bio/memoir books: I like the person, their skills and their accomplishments but I just don't want to listen to them. Chest-thumping badasses make awesome characters but subpar storytellers. Also, at some point everybody will know how arduous special forces BUD/S training is and we won't need the first third of these books to tell us about it.

Rating this book based on my fond memories of it in high school and having read it again recently. Truth be told, I most likely wouldn't be where I am today had it not been for this book, however would I say I enjoyed it in my most recent read? Ehhhh, let's just say there were a few times where I laughed out loud and thought about my teenage self. I'll cut to the chase... would I advise my young self to read it? Most definitely! Under the caveat that I could tell my young self to remember the phrase, "for entertainment purposes only". ;)
