Kendrick goes darker in this third installment, with Gabriel St Clair second son who served in the Home Office as a spy until his father and brother die and he suddenly inherits a title. His biggest shame is that 10 years ago he asked Lydia Cecil to wait for him. Which she did. And then he stopped writing. When he returned to London, she shows up on his doorstep and he refuses to see her. Now, Lydia's life is in danger because of an association with Gabriel - the Russian crime syndicate he'd infiltrated in Moscow is out to get him - and the only way to offer her protection is marriage.

I read a book with a semi-similar setup right before this one and I'll be honest, I enjoyed Kendrick's much more. The relationship is darker, because Gabriel's experiences are darker. (I was surprised that this felt darker than Thorne & Alex's book!) But Lydia is with Gabriel every step of the way now that he's come back to her, even when they're both terrified.
