A monumental undertaking. Not without its flaws, but imo it is pedagogically and historically invaluable. Unlike Gombrich and many other art historians, the multiple authors each take a critical stance to the history of modern and contemporary art, and ask the same of their readers, rather than portraying themselves as an unquestionable authority (the downside is that the writing here is often more academic and dry than Gombrich). An essential point of reference for all interested in modern & contemporary art, especially students!
