Another book I somehow never read as a kid. Such a beautiful coming of age story with an important history lesson of American and immigration history.

A beautiful, touching coming of age story that focuses on the challenges of leaving a life behind for the hope of a better one. This book discusses one kind of immigration story and how immigrants have fought to live in this country when they could no longer live in their home country. This story also shows how quickly our lives can change, our privilege be lost and the pains that come along with learning to live life differently than you ever have before.

Part of me wishes I had read this when I was the intended age, but another part of me is glad I got the experience to learn about this history from people in my life, and then supplement it with this novel. It's a very well-written book and a good and important story, especially for Californians. The author's note was lovely.
