Was not as hooked as I hopped I would be. The premises and the beginning were pretty interesting. But it went a bit downhill from that. I did like the characters and it was interesting to learn something new about a culture. Thank you :)

it was good but there was something missing. the dynamic between the main character and her grandma was very fun to read. it was a lot darker than I expected though so definitely check trigger warnings. the ending was very well done in my opinion and I think that leaving it open was a creative decision that i really like.

This book had an interesting premise, but it just didn't come together at the end for me. The feud between Ah Ma and Ng Chee Hin simmered slowly throughout the book without really coming to a boil - their confrontation seemed anticlimactic and he isn't seen again. I kept feeling like there would be some twist or nuance to the controversy about the temple, but the ones that are revealed just didn't feel satisfying. My favorite part was Kor Kor and her views on Malaysian religion and Christianity. The concept that one religion's deities won't harm you if you worship different ones was very interesting and amusing to me.
