Such a good book, it has stuck a good storyline! It was slow in places at the start but it made up for it. The stuff that happened in it was brilliant.

Aww this was a really sweet read and I loved the audiobook! The romance went in a different direction than I expected but I still really loved it and can't wait to continue with the sequel!

Such a rich and enthralling universe!

Raybearer is the first in a trilogy inspired by the author's Nigerian heritage and knowledge of West African mythology, as well as her experiences growing up in the US as an immigrant.

Tarisai is half human, half djinn, birthed by a mysterious lady who keeps her secluded and secret in an invisible building, cared for by staff who whisper 'demon child' under their breath. They are training her relentlessly for the chance to be chosen as the next emperor's raybearer - a council member with a psychic connection to the ruler, granting them immunity from one type of death. But raybearer's are also the only people who can kill their emperor, which is exactly what the 'lady' intends for her daughter to do.

Tarisai has a choice - succumb to the story written for her, or write her own.

I LOVED this book - this world - these characters. Tarisai is so tangible, I feel like I could take her in my arms. She is desperate for love and family, but also control over her own destiny.

I am very excited to read the next instalment.

I freaking loved this book. Such a beautiful world full of mythology and characters that felt so raw and real.
The main character Tarasai I think I will go down as an all time fav character. There is an instant connection to her as we see her grow right before our very eyes with a deadly task for someone so young and one she doesn’t even understand. I really felt her emotions and turmoil in this book. The relationship between her and her mother is like nothing I’ve read before. It was so complex and emotional. By the end of the book you can truly understand the reasoning behind The Lady’s actions (however unfair).

The magic system was a breath of fresh air too. Totally unique and easy to understand. The author really did a wonderful thing with this book. The idea of the Raybearer and their council siblings is something so precious. I adored the idea of the mask. I just can’t get over the writing. The rich history played such an amazing part in Tarasai’s life as well as the other characters.

Sanjeet absolutely owns my heart and probably has my favourite back story. To see him now compared to the flashbacks we got of this childhood… I was in absolute sadness. He didn’t deserve it. Then you’ve got Dayo who really didn’t ask for anything and just got got stuck being the crown Prince. This found family is absolutely everything with the addition of Kirah. I wish we got more of the other council siblings but maybe in book 2 :).

Also there is Ace rep! I’m pretty sure this is my first book I’ve read with Ace rep and I’m glad to see it.

Overall a solid 5 stars. I was not bored once, didn’t find it slow at any parts and really enjoyed reading about the characters and throughly had a good time with this book.

I like this book and loved that it was a different culture than other YA books I've read. I
loved the audio, the narration was brilliant and really immersed me in the world and culture. The magic was intriguing and I will probably read the next one.
