Earl of Brecken

The Earl of Brecken is part of the Wicked Earls’ Club universe. I had no idea this series existed, and I was delight to see more books shelved at Goodreads. Anyhoo, as the blurb states, Madoc, Earl of Brecken, needs money while Miss Evelina Franklin is looking forward to her first season and is searching for the perfect hero.

The novel starts with backstory. I will admit I am not a fan of prologues, and unfortunately, this one was to showcase that the earl had a heart since he loves animals. As interesting as this was, showcasing the earl’s attributes could have happened easily in the novel. There is more slowing when the reader has to witness how the earl ended up in debt. Personally, I just wanted to get to the meat of the story.

Earl of Brecken by Aubrey Wynn is a lovely Regency romance novel. The premise is not new, with an impoverished peer needing the dowry of a merchant’s daughter, but Ms. Wynn portrayed it with the right tone and panache to make the book quite enjoyable.

Young Evelina is such a joyful debutante. She’s quick to help others and has a forgiving nature. Her relationships with her sister and father provide a glimpse into where she gets her strength of character.

Madoc, home after years of government service, finds his family estate in shambles due to neglect and embezzlement at the hands of a swindling estate manager. His only recourse is to find a wife with a healthy dowry. When he falls in love with Evie, a second daughter, his dowry hopes and her gentle heart are both in danger.

The settings are vividly described whether we are in the swanky London homes and clubs or raising a barn in Wales. It’s easy to picture every scene in your mind.

This book is the first I have read from the author and the series. I’m sure there are many people in the Earl of Brecken that either already have their story in print or deserve to. I plan to read more as soon as time allows.

Plan to be swept away to Regency London and Wales for a few hours by the delightful story of Madoc and Evelina!

I received a copy of the book for a Goddess Fish book tour. This review is my honest, unbiased opinion. You can find details about my policies and rating system on my website.

A charming story! After returning from 4 years in secret work for the Home Office, Madoc Brecken returns to find his estate has been left to ruin, fleeced by a dishonest estate man. Determined to right the wrongs his people have endured and return the estate to glory, he goes to London after his fathers passing to find an heiress to marry. Despite her fathers wealth and his growing feelings, Madoc cannot bring himself to propose to Evelina Franklin. She deserved someone who would choose her solely for love. But sometimes what you need and what you want can actually aline.
This story is beautifully written and flows nicely. Even the minor characters have a way of standing out and making you take notice. A good story leaves with a peaceful sigh of contentment, and this one does just that. These two deserve their happy ever after.

A first glance at a frozen lake and the spell was cast. As Lord Madoc Brecken is forced to go to London and find a woman with a large dowry, he is bewitched by the beautiful Miss Evelina Franklin. She’s not penniless but doesn’t have the money needed for the mess his estate is in due to an unscrupulous estate manager. How could he give her up?

Evelina “Evie” Franklin loves to be the bell of the ball and dreams of marrying a man with a title. But as the second daughter, she is not entitled to the dowry her father will bestow on her older sister. It is not all about the money to Evie, but about a husband she can love and who will love her in return. Lord Brecken started out as a flirtation, but his honesty and charm have her smitten. She promised herself she would not find love before her sister, but love can’t be ignored.

Evie is young and naïve, but she loves her family and places her awkward older sister Fenella’s happiness before her own. I respect Evie’s insistence on waiting for her sister to find love first as is the norm in London society however youthful that may seem. I also like the rapport she has with her family. Madoc is a responsible young man who is working hard to find the man who stole his inheritance and left hardship for the people around his estate. But in the meantime, he needs to find money soon to rebuild his home. So, as society denotes, he must find a wealthy wife to save his home. The deal he makes with Evie’s loveable and generous father is life-saving and exactly what all of them needed.

I recommend this sweet Regency romance with likable characters, courtship traditions, responsibilities of nobility, and a bit of intrigue.

Thank you to Ms. Wynne for giving me the opportunity to read this book with no expectation of a positive review.

I love the Wicked Earl’s Club series! The series always bring an entertaining, sweet love story. It’s always a quick, happy read.

Madoc’s coffers are empty, and his mother is pushing him to marry. Even though he is financially destitute, I like that he holds out hope for love. There were times he seemed almost clinical when trying to choose a bride, but he warmed to me when he found Evie. Evie is idealistic and falls for Madoc; unbeknownst to her that he is broke. Her bubbly innocence was refreshing and added to the story. Their passion was a slow burn, growing as they spent more time together.

There was a lot of the plot where the couple wasn’t together. However, those absences gave depth to the individual characters. The story did not race by but kept an even, exciting pace. It took me a few pages to get invested, but when I did, I was 100%. I loved Evie’s sister and Madoc’s father; they gave the plot substance.

This book was a sweet romance, but I still felt the intense attraction between the couple. This was a fun, short read. If you like the Wicked Earl’s Club, you’ll enjoy this book!

I received an ARC of this book from Booksprout. This is my honest, voluntary opinion.
