First of all- what a great title. I really liked this deep dive into a dynamic and a topic that doesn’t get enough attention in literature. A story that draws on the humanity of the characters that reckon with complex narratives and problems that come with not fitting into tight boxes. I thought it was very interesting to get to read about questions that we never ask enough, what family means, motherhood and what it means to be a trans woman (person) in a world that is uncomfortable with anything that lies outside arbitrary delineations of what’s ok and what’s not. It’s a story that made me keenly aware of how much I am not thinking of, and so this was a great exercise of sitting with an experience that’s quite different from mine and get curious. The prose was dynamic, empathetic and fast paced, unflinching and sprawling. Maybe a bit too carried away at times.

Wow wow wow. This book was electrifying. I am buzzing after setting it down. My mind is turning over and over that ending and I think it is so brilliant and tender and brave. Ugh. I think this book is close to perfect. I would have been interested in Katrina’s perspective but I also understand why the narration only shifts between the two trans main characters as that helps emphasize so many of the book’s themes. I am rethinking womanhood, motherhood, gender, family, parenting, transness, the illusion of choice. Beautiful, rich novel that I won’t soon get out of my head.

This book was amazing! More thoughts on it later but I loved this unapologetically real look into these queer character's lives. It was funny, sad, and uncomfortable all at once. I will continue thinking about this one for a long time.
