This was everything the first book was and better. I really did not expect to love the sequel this much.

Everything I had pointed out in the first book as not working out for me, was gone from this book. Be it because of the better flow of the narration, an added POV or just plainly due to the fact that we went to a completely different dimension.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

The Warlock Snare picks up a week after The Relic Spell, with Orion and Max trying to figure out how to find Briar after she disappeared at the end of the last book. With Elsa’s help, they’re able to find a thaumaturge powerful enough to track Briar through different dimensions, and to open a portal to transport them. However, once they reach the plane that Briar’s grandfather lives in, they find themselves embroiled in a plan to bring down a warlock terrorizing the plane.

I really enjoyed this one just as much as the first book! Novaro writes the characters and the dynamics so well. Orion is such an interesting character, and his struggle with feelings of guilt, inadequacy, and powerlessness in the face of all the things trying to kill him is really compelling. He just wants to protect the people he cares about, but his power doesn’t always measure up to the task. He also has such different relationships with Max, Elsa, his family, Briar, Julian and newcomer Carwyn, but Novaro juggles them all so well, giving time to develop each one.

There’s a bit of mystery surrounding the warlock in the demon dimension, and I enjoyed unraveling that mystery as Orion started to realize that everything wasn’t as it seemed to be. This plot also discusses the responsibility that comes with power and the effects of war on its soldiers in a way that’s interesting for the characters, and not cliche despite being an often used theme.

And once again, the magic is really cool! I love when Orion starts asking all kinds of question about how the magic works, and Novaro has created a well developed magic system. And I love all the action scenes-the book spends a lot of time on relationships, but not at the expense of action. Similar to the last book, it does get bogged down a little somewhere between the 50% and 75% mark, but though I sometimes found myself wishing we could get to the point, I still couldn’t put it down.

I highly recommend picking this one up, especially if you liked the last one, and I’m very excited for the next one.
