Bukowski's poems are stark and unsentimental in the extreme. These free verse poems cover subjects I don't usually see from other poets: gambling, drinking, fighting... Some are despairing, some hopeful, and all reek of honesty.

I would like to eventually read all of his works.

Wow, this is my 1000th book.
Neat.

I’m surprised I’m giving this five stars, TBH. But there’s a vulnerability in these poems I don’t remember seeing when I’d read earlier Bukowski. There’s also a brutal economy to the prose that gets across his images and themes in so few words that I found really impressive.
My poetry journey continues…

I love Hank’s slow march to death. I know that’s a weird and gross statement but the way he captures both being content and desperately raging against its approach are the tropes of life in degrees.

I really liked this collection and especially the way it was constructed. I found some new favorite poems in this book as well.

Some of the poems are incredible and some are lackluster, but the thing I love about Bukowski is that he doesn't care what you think - his poems aren't for you, they're for the sake of creating, for writing, for recording thought and madness and living, and that's what makes them great.

Some I really loved! But too many others in the way. Still enjoy him as a writer, but perhaps in smaller doses.
