Bullet Review:

Ten years after the events in Descender. Ascender opens with a strange, totalitarian ruler called only "Mother" who controls all technology and exerts her force with powerful magic. Tech of all sort is outlawed and controlled by Mother and her people; people are forced to swear oaths of loyalty to her regime.

Descender had its ups and downs, but always always always had gorgeous art. This is the same here - I think this is a strong start to a new story in the same universe (obviously, we all see the similar tropes - heroes hidden away, trying to avoid the tyrannical new government, rebellious daughter who knows little to nothing of the Old World and who looks to the stars for inspiration), and honestly, I can't wait to see where it goes from here.

Reread Update:

I had 100% forgotten EVERYTHING from most of Descender to the fact I read volume 1. I am so glad I reread volume 1 before jumping into volume 2.

Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen have done it again in this breathtaking launch to the sequel series to Descender. Even though I started reading those comics only about 5 years ago, they're a really nostalgic thing for me. I had a different job at the time and I have fond memories of putting my feet up on slow days, reading new issues of Descender, and listening to Dirt Poor Robins.

So it's great to be back, even though my life looks a little different now, I made sure to put my feet up and listen to Dirt Poor Robins while reading this first entry of Ascender.

And, even though this is technically in the same universe as its predecessor, it's fitting my life looks a little different than it did when I left Descender, as the world in Ascender looks pretty different now, too, not since the robbies went away.

This was such a fun reintroduction to everything, even if it was difficult to say goodbye to characters such
SpoilerEffie
and
SpoilerAndy
. I have three more volumes from the library though and I can't wait to see what's in store!

Already knew I would love this and Nguyen’s style is a treat to dive back into. I really adore this series of Lemire’s! I once again find myself thinking I should look for original projects more often.

Seeing Andy with Mila is so wonderful because he is still clearly the Andy we knew, but now a father with shifted priorities. Mila is super tough and already is worming her way into my heart. Her entire demeanor is just so refreshing. She’s strong willed and protective and she deserves the world… preferably not one controlled by Mother.

Mother is a very interesting villain that is being set up. She’s incredibly sadistic and horrible and shows only care for her own desires above everything else. Her craving for control is only possible with her magic… which has very unique properties and I look forward to learning more about it as I progress through this series!

Descender firmly landed itself as a favorite comic series of mine, and I’m hoping this one does the same in the end. A very fantastic start and I’m glad to be back in it!!
