I wasn't expecting this book to go as in-depth as it did, but I'm really happy it did. It was so cool to see the behind-the-scenes of the creation of Avatar. I love what they included and how special it felt to get a peek into the ATLA creation process.

A beautiful book, and absolutely worth the read (and the price) for any fan of the show. My only complaint is that I wish there was MORE. Some of the images are quite small, especially for concept sketches with handwritten notations I had to squint to read. I also wish there was more commentary on some of the artistic choices, rather than just page after page of artwork. (I know: it's an art book, it's supposed to be page after page of artwork. But I can watch the show for pretty images or the characters' outfits-- I want that behind-the-scenes info!)

My favorite parts were the beginning look at the development/pitching process for the show, how the creators gradually developed the ideas for the story (Aang started out as an android shepherd boy with a monkey robot companion named Momo-3!!), and the translated in-show posters that were written in Chinese calligraphy. There were also lots of little fun things, like seeing the Ocean Spirit Aang from the season one finale referred to as "Koizilla" in the notes.

M.N.S. did not read this book. It was amazing, full of awesome art, comments from Byan and Mike, concepts, and it was also very funny.

Awesome, awesome, awesome dive into hundreds of concept sketches, character designs and background artistry for this excellent animated series. The show is so imaginative and amazing, it should not have surprised me that it what we saw onscreen was the tip of a collaborative creative iceberg. Honestly, a delight from start to finish, just like the show.

This is practically a movie guide and honestly, that is one of the few types of books I was never really interested in. But I guess that is the consequence of the fact that most of them are overpriced books with little in them (sorry for my bookish prejudices, I am working on them). I definitely never read this type of book front to back, much less in one day. But it was so beautiful and so interesting that I just couldn’t help myself. Bryan and Mike are telling us the tale of Avatar from the true beginnings, they share the first drawing with us, the first vision they had, some titbits of information I already had, but most of them were brand new and so exciting. We learn about the artistic creative process and that was so interesting to me, because it showed me that evolvement of ideas was quite normal and that the “end product” could be completely different from that first vision and that is okay… But they also show us some practical background struggles ant things to consider I never realised before. They also share some of their inspiration, which is great (I added a new movie to my “to-watch” list). And as I said the book is visually absolutely gorgeous. I definitely recommend this to Avatar fans.
