Very quiet slices of different women’s lives. They were ok but not a single one was really memorable or poignant for me.

Absolutely excellent collection of  short stories. The perfect touch of Australiana and womanhood. Must get my own copy.

This is a very special collection of stories about women—young women, older women, sisters, mothers, teachers, step-daughters, grand-daughters. It's about women sticking together, supporting their sisters. And it's about love: young love, first love, new love, old love, familial love. Unrequited love. Lost love.

Emily Paull has been able to capture her characters realistically and compassionately, and they're all relatable. We’ve all been well-behaved at times, and we’ve all misbehaved, too:

We’ve sought revenge.
We’ve taken risks for the thrill of it.
We’ve gone out with or stayed married to men who’ve treated us badly.
We’ve felt lesser than our more important spouses.
We’ve felt survivor guilt.
We’ve not finished reading the book for book club.
We’ve worried about being judged on our ability to cook a curry.
We’ve felt out of our depth amongst society women.
We’ve been rejected for someone else.
We’ve been overweight and bought diet books in the hope of finding love.

This is a quietly feminist collection—the message is never forced—but by the end of the book, you’ll find yourself wondering: What is a well behaved woman anyway? We’re all here, battling through, doing our utmost to live the best lives we can. And you'll want to pat yourself and your fellow sisters on the back.
