This graphic novel is so good, but it sadly makes one fatal flaw. It has such great information on unions and mutual aid. My favorite part is a description of why seemingly "unrelated" people help each other such as dock workers in the US refusing to unload Apartheid South African ships. They show that mutual aid is present throughout the rest of the animal kingdom and not just our species. The fatal flaw though is it tries to pack too much information into too tight a space. At times I was unwilling to strain to read, so I skimmed a little. I want my reading to be relaxing or only mentally challenging; I don't want to challenge my eye muscles to a workout 😂 Also I love the illustrations!

A book the world needs right now - left me with a lot of hope for how the world might be and a lot of anger at how it is, and that’s the combination that makes change happen.

Stunning exploration of the simple instinct to help out your mates which gave birth to the modern workers union movement. Jumps from philosophical to practical, critical to utopian. An honest portrayal of the powerful pull of collectivization whilst we slide into neoliberal nullified individualization. The story is certainly not finished although whichever way things pan out I feel richer for seeing how we got here and how we continue to show solidarity despite the immense pressure on us. Thoroughly a captivating joy to read, akin to cartoons Adventure Time or Midnight Gospel by Pendleton Ward. I could see myself returning to chapters as worldwide events unfold to tease out my views and ideas around how to go forward. Definitely passing it to my workmates!

This is incredible, I can’t believe it isn’t more popular. The illustrations are TOP TIER & the content is really informative. It taught me a lot about unions, both their history & where we’re at today. Please read this !!

Living in America, it feels as if we're constantly told that all of our labor freedoms are kind gifts deigned upon us workers by the rich and powerful. So it's always refreshing to see the long history of labor movements presented without the constant validation of capitalism's righteousness.

I like a lot about this book! It's brilliantly drawn, with very evocative layouts, but occasionally the text can be hard to read in print. It probably works much better via a digital medium, but I had a few instances of needing to squint to read. It's also informative, including anecdotes about labor movements dating back to the 1700s. However that information can be kind of dense. Combined that with some of the layout difficulties I had, doesn't always make for an easy read, but I enjoyed the content well enough to recommend to anyone interested in unionizing, which should be everyone.
