The best thing here is the prose style. with a handful of excesses (there's one or two phrases that Harrison clearly thinks are cleverer than they are), it does a wonderful job of evoking the right tone
For a main plot centering on the conflict between two queens this book sure doesn't have many women in it.
I feel like I should read Dying Earth or the Book of the New Sun for comparison.
Without spoiling the exact ending I was surprised to learn that the sequels to this book continue from that point. Hard to imagine what comes next, but I will probably read and find out.
