This love triangle is becoming so much more apparent and already I am sick of it. Hester, bloody well make up your mind woman! UGH

Beyond this irritating development, I felt that The Silent Cry is one of the more interesting Monk novels. I had so many theories while I was reading, some things fell into place quite quickly, but others (while being suspicious) did not reveal itself until the end.

Also... I really did not see that coming.

One of the faster paced William Monk novels.

Hester Latterly is nursing a young man found badly beaten next to his father's body while Monk is investigating the rapes and beatings of some poor women of St Giles. The two cases intersect in another fascinating Victorian mystery.
I enjoyed the first few books in this series, but I've found them more and more compelling as it moves along. The characters of Monk and Hester are so well defined. Both are learning more about themselves, especially Monk in this book. I always like reading the bits about Oliver Rathbone and John Evans who both appear again here.
Ms. Perry knows her subject well and effortlessly conveys the brutality and hopeless poverty of Victorian London. The ending here was a bit of a surprise though all the clues were there when I look back. Another very enjoyable read in this series.

This one didn't hold my attention as had previous books in the series. The plot would have been more effective if the author had not used similar plots in the past. Just an okay book.

This is the first William Monk I've read, but I liked the characters so well, I'm going to have to go back and read the whole series from the beginning.

It’s official: there will never be an Anne Perry novel that I don’t like. After 9 books of hers, and having nothing negative to say about any of tbem whatsoever, I can’t even begin to fathom it. Of course, it’s entirely possible, but I really, truly can’t imagine not absolutely LOVING everything she’s written.....even though it breaks my heart.

I can never guess it all. I’m not one to guess in the first place, bur I keep thinking since I’ve read so many of her mysteries that I can pick up on her secrets one book at a time. That’s not going well thus far.
