Not very many of the novels I read are set in WWI. I really enjoyed this mystery. It was well written, gave enough details of war without just telling us the research the author did and was really well crafted. I have the next book already in my TBR queue.

Started this in paperback but ended up finishing it on audio because it was due back at the library. I'm just starting to dip my toes into mysteries and this was a good start.

This is the first book in a mystery series about a British nurse during WW I. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

Audiobook: well-narrated, a historical mystery set during WWI was entertaining and kept me guessing. I liked the main character and her approach to a mysterious situation. Have requested the second Bess Crawford mystery from the library. Some heavy topics like shell-shock, sexism and racism well handled but overall this was an easy listen.

I enjoyed the richly detailed world the author builds--I believe in the WWI nurse, and Todd creates a moving picture of England during this terrible war. The fact that there's a mystery solve (albeit a somewhat unlikely one) made it a pleasure to read. I liked it enough to look forward to the sequel, though I didn't love it so much that I have to read it right away.

A Duty to the Dead by Charles Todd was a very enjoyable read. I've had this author on my to be read list for a while and finally got the first book in the Bess Crawford series. For anyone who loves a historical mystery with a strong female lead then this book is for you. It's set in WWI and the main character is a nurse who has been entrusted to deliver a message back to the family of a dying soldier. Her visit to the family ends up reopening painful family secrets and of course leads to a few dead bodies.

A good solid English mystery set during World War I. This book was recommended to me because I am a fan of Downton Abbey and historical novels. I liked the main character, Bess, and found the general story to be very interesting. I will probably be reading more of this series.

Interesting read! A bit slow going at first, but about halfway through I was really in. I liked how the author didn't Bess get off easy, and solutions weren't necessarily quick. So many characters to keep track of though. Looking forward to the next one!

While it took a bit of time to get into the mystery of this, I really enjoyed it. I wish I had known about the Bess Crawford series when I was in peak Downton Abbey fandom, but I’m glad to have found them now.
