3.0

A space exploration novel along the lines of the Ultimate Hitchhiker’s Guide, with laugh out loud moments, running jokes, and general ludicrousness. With a heavily commercialized home world bankrolling planetary colonization, three intrepid, though underpaid and barely trained, employees and their not-too-smart-so-as-to-keep-humans-getting-jumpy AI wake up to a new planet and a whole lot of complications. I was consistently amused, though ultimately disappointed.

For better or worse, the actual events of the plot basically lead nowhere. While this could be entirely the point of an adventure that was often made up of big problems that turned out to be nothing, it was dissatisfying as an endgame. It was a bit like one of those long jokes with no punchline. Did I enjoy the ride? Absolutely. I just thought we were going somewhere.

I was given a copy of the book as part of the 2023 Self Published Science Fiction Competition. While it was named a part of our unofficial quarter finalist list, it won’t be getting my vote to move on. I wish the author luck with their projects!
