Once again Karen Lord has written something completely different from her previous books, yet equally compelling. That she did it while setting the story in the same world as The Best of All Possible Worlds is even more remarkable. While it shares a setting and some characters with the previous book, it's not a sequel. It takes a completely different path, examines a completely different element of that galactic society, and carries a different tone and pace and rhythm. It was high stakes, a true foray into galactic politics and economics, but it was also small and personal and let its denouement unfurl for a long time, resetting the pieces and giving us satisfying and meaningful journeys and trajectories for its individual protagonists.

I came to this book on a high from the first of the trilogy and it did not disappoint. A beautiful story of people trying to live good lives and improve their society in everyday ways.

Couldn't focus.
Felt like it's a second book not first (find out).

Needed to re-read The Best of All Possible Worlds again first - too many characters I couldn’t remember.

I put it down and didn’t feel the urge to pick it back up again. I didn’t feel connected to either the characters or the world.
