If you offer your reader enough suspense to keep them interested, you can jump to an apparently disconnected place in the story. Trust me, reader: I’ll return to this. (62)

Wee little book that falls somewhere between lit crit and memoir and craft. Jones weaves her story with Cheryl Strayed's story—Strayed's literal story, mind, with its '[b:Wild|12262741|Wild From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail|Cheryl Strayed|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1453189881l/12262741._SY75_.jpg|17237712]' (sorry) twists and turns. And so even as Jones is writing her own outdoors story, she's taking it apart again, turning the seams inside-out and showing the reader how and why it fits together as it does.

This makes for an intriguing dive for a hiker-writer, and I wish it had been around for my MFA professors to teach with; I hope it finds its way into many other classrooms (and hiker-writers' hands) in the future.

This book took me longer than I would have liked to finish. The reason is the truth that I am now alone from my MFA where Jones taught me and my peers. This is a personal and weak reason, but it's true. This book was the last I purchased from my mentors.

About the book:
There is an underlying truth about life in this criticism and analysis of not just Strayed's "Wild" but also Jones's own life. It was a punch in the gut the truth that we are all alone in this world and we must fight for ourselves. Jones discussed how Strayed and herself did it through physical tasks and ruminations. I would dare say that Jones challenges the reader to do something similar, if they feel they need to. The weaving of so many threads together was masterfully done and this is a book I highly recommend to someone who likes critical looks at both memoir and by proxy your own life choices.
To anyone that is a fan on Strayed and Jones- read this book!
