This book is **BIG** on themes, in a small package. It might be meant for middle schoolers, but it's not a condescending book at all. I remember being 12, and on the cusp of leaving childhood behind. Caroline grows up, figures out who she is, learns to forgive herself and others, starts seeing shades of grey. This is a great bildungsroman!

I didn't want this book to end. I was so torn about the way things played out but I absolutely loved the journey. I'm a sucker for anything magical realism, and I'm partial to Caribbean storytelling. I was rooting for Caroline the entire time. She deserves all the love and care in the world, but unfortunately she was frequently met with the ugliest parts of humanity. This coming of age story took me through a wave of emotions as the plot developed and the main characters relationship evolved. This book made me a forever fan of Callender and I can't wait to read their other novels.

It's a coming of age tale. Caroline Murphy is a lonely girl in St. Thomas and she misses her mom who left a year and three months ago.  She doesn't understand why her mom stopped writing to her and she keeps asking about her but her father doesn't tell her anything. She's also bullied at school until one day Kalinda arrives at school and everything changes. Caroline gets her first friend and together they go looking for her mother.  I love the setting of this book and I love the elements of magical realism.  Caroline is precocious twelve year old and I love her.

This was such a lovely yet kind of heartbreaking book. I haven’t read a middle grade chapter book since I was a child and wow, this was good! I liked the style and appreciated how the author navigated themes/concepts like parental abandonment, loss, school dynamics (read: mean girls) and self-discovery from a 12-year-old’s perspective. I can honestly see how I could have used (and in some ways needed) this book at that age!

Be mindful of CWs!

A heartfelt depiction of mental illness, budding queerness and disjointed families seen through the eyes of a 12 year old!
