This was a strange but fun book. I liked the humour and the unexpected places the plot went. The world that was created is so bonkers and maybe it got a bit too silly at times but I enjoyed the adventure and the whole concept of literary detectives. I really warmed to Thursday, it was nice to read genre fiction with a slightly older protagonist and I think I will read more of this series particularly if I'm in the mood for something a bit silly.

OK, maybe 4.5 stars - but the extra half is for a great concept. Thursday Next is one of those people that can move between the real world and the world of fiction. Her job is to protect the fiction world from changes - and there are Bad Guys trying to make changes. Given the initial assumption, it proceeds quite logically. Of course, there is some bureaucracy involved ...

RE-READ MARCH 2014: Still 4 stars, but now I've read the rest of the series, and it gets better. There are so many ideas in this first book that there wasn't room to set them all together with proper linkages, and the later books do just that. I hope you'll judge this as what it is, a fun romp. It isn't an attempt to get on the curricula of Great Literature courses.

Ridiculous, in a Terry Pratchett way. Funny and witty. The characters were a bit one dimensional but the story was interesting.

This is a great concept, with a lot of wit to it. It's a lot of fun all around, although the prose is a bit weak—for example, the protagonist picks up a mirror and regards herself, solely so we can get a clunky description of what she looks like. The series improves as it goes along, however.

I'm in my did not finish era, I just have too many books I wanna read to push through ones I'm not really feeling. This was cool in concept it just did not grab my attention. I feel like I had to force myself to pick it up

I'm not really sure how to describe this one... Fun and bizarre with lots of classic literary references.
