This little book packs a real punch! It is charming and clever but also a gut-wrenching exploration of disenfranchisement, loss, and tribalism. Without giving away too much, I think the overall tone remains hopeful, but be aware that hope will be tested. George Saunders does a fantastic job of convincing the reader of the need for kindness, acceptance, and decency, and I highly recommend this book to all readers. It’s quick and impactful and everyone should read it.

Nice concept, story was sad, and no you haven't seen a human do those things, but they do happen in other ways. There has to be a balance between humans and animals, however, I don't believe that will ever happen.

I was thinking about how to review this book - one that is so obviously kind and moralistic it's easy to criticize. But what can I say: I like floating in Saunders' wit and ethics.

Fox 8 reminds me of two quotes. One cited in a review of the book, from the author himself: "literature is a form of fondness-for-life. It is love for life taking verbal form." (Note to self: read said essay https://www.newyorker.com/books/page-turner/my-writing-education-a-timeline)

The other one, older, heard enough times over the past decade to shape parts of my mind: "In this world, you must be oh so smart or oh so pleasant. Well, for years I was smart. I recommend pleasant."
