Harrowing fictional account of three teenagers who flee danger in Guatemala for a better life in the United States. This was almost impossible to listen to because their lives were so difficult but I think sometimes we need to read the hard books to be reminded about how fortunate we are.

Gut wrenching. Traumatizing. Painful. Tearful. This one experience that Pulga, Pequena and Chico attempt as they leave their beloved home of Guatemala to go to the United States is a trek that is made everyday by people just like you and me wanting a better life then the one they were dealt with. I could write a dissertation about how distorted the right wing, conservative media paints these men, women and children but I won’t waste my time. Instead, this book highlights the fact that the trio are real people who needed to leave not because they wanted to but because dying at the hands of a gang/ gang member was not how they wanted to go out. The emotional trauma was felt in the words the author wrote and I will be forever grateful for this book.

This book was tough, and every time it seemed like things were getting slightly better I was proved wrong. I enjoyed that this wasn’t a sugar coated version of what this journey is like though, and I enjoyed the different perspectives of the characters. But man did this one hurt.
