I personally didn't enjoy this book, but I think everyone should read it, to understand critical things migrants from South America and Mexico face when heading to the United States border.

I Liked:
-The flawed main characters
-Depiction of brujas in the book (since I don't know a lot about them)

Gripping, compelling, tense, heartbreaking, reeking of reality and authenticity and populated by three of the most memorable young people I’ve read recently. That’s We Are Not From Here. It tells the story of Pulga, Chico and Pequeña, three Guatemalan teens, who feel that their lives are in so much danger that they must secretly leave their loving families and risk their lives by making the gruelling trip through Mexico and attempting to enter the United States. This follows them every step of the way. The very real risks and dangers of their journey are not sugar-coated; nor are they sensationalised. In Mexico they meet kindness, from individuals and the church, but also violence and hostility, some from individuals and some from the government. The harsh and inhumane treatment in the United States at the hands of ICE is also spotlighted. For me this book excelled at showing the complex reality of the decision to migrate and the toll migration took, physically, emotionally and psychologically. Life at home was not all bad and the decision to leave was made with regret and at great cost. Neither was the US an unblemished nirvana, a fact which was known. Yet migration was still better than the alternative.

Gut wrenching. I cried for the kids the story follows. I was a little disappointed with the ending because I wanted more, but at the same time it’s nice how it was left up to imagination.
