For me personally it was jarring seeing Brooks Brothers being referred to as a clothing brand rather than a riot.

Genuinely one of the most bizarre and unpleasant reading experiences of my life – won't rate this because I don't know how. I actually like Bret Easton Ellis's writing a lot and I'm sure this is a great novel and is savage and cutting and genius and whatever all the positive reviews say. Patrick Bateman is objectively a fascinating character and the way Ellis is able to communicate a mood of such abject misery and emptiness is honestly impressive. Beyond that, though, it is hard for me to lend this book a shred of critical thought because it was so profoundly disturbing and upsetting. Nothing else to say. Need to go read something happy now.

i totally understand that this book is a satire— and a wonderful one at that— but dear god i physically could not stand to read this book one minute longer. the beginning was quite slow, and then picked up around page 150 or so, and from there, i could’ve vomited every single time he was near a girl. i doubt i’ll ever reread, too physically engaging. however, i thought it was a great critique of the 80s and american culture at the time

This was the most vile and disgusting book I’ve ever read. I don’t understand how people can say that they enjoyed reading this.
