If you don't want to think while you read, I recommend Jerome Dickey. Great for laying by the pool.

Sister Sister
4/5 stars

This one was a reread for me but it's been somewhere between 8 to 10 years since I first read it so besides like 2 big events I forgot all of it.

Valerie:
For a majority of this book, Valerie was my favorite sister to follow, and I found it interesting that hers was the only perspective the was in 3rd person. I hated the fact that she stayed with such a piece of shit such as Walter but I loved her character development by the end of the book. I just wished the best for her, and ADORED her and Daniel, they had such incredible chemistry and set moments. And I loved him as a love interest.

The major scene that happens at her breaking point with Walter was one of the iconic scenes that stuck out in my brain before I reread it after all of these years.

Picture her as a young short haired Beyoncé.

Inda:
I wasn't feeling Inda at first, because of her voice but she very quickly because my favorite character. I loved her dynamic with every character she came into contact with, her siblings, Chiquita, Michael, even Raymond. She had so many layers and was so dynamic and even though she can come off as ghetto she's an intelligent lawyer and omg I just love her. She's a babe. She's a queen. Book girlfriend for the win.

And oh girl the beach scene at the end with her was the the scene that I had remembered.

Chiquita:
Now, she was the one that I think we spent the least amount of time getting to know so I felt slightly less connected to her. I adore her friendship with Inda, and the subplot of her meeting her mother was fantastically done. I thought that she should've respected herself more, and wished that her romance plot was explored more.

Quick problems I had with this book that kept it from being rated higher was
-the amount of ridiculous language in this book brought it down half a star, it felt a rad overdone and felt like the over the top dialogue of the Cheetah Girls books, just if they were all grown up.

-the other half star was for something that really bothered me. There is a scene where one of the girls and her guy are on a date and see two women of color who are also on a date. This detail excited me so much because it felt like a call back to Dickeys earlier book Between Lovers which I loved (a book that featured the first bisexual character I've ever seen in media) I even thought it may be the same characters from that book making a cameo. But that scene turned very offensive and homophobic very fast which thing said like (I'm generalizing btw because I don't remember word for word)
•V says as she seen the two woman kiss that she remembers why she doesn't go around that part of town now
•D suggesting that they may only be kissing as a political statement.
And the one that really pissed me off!

To paraphrase a conversation between the two characters as they watched these women kiss
•"what do you think made them "like that"
•"must've been a man that hurt them"

It bothered me so much that I thought I was being generous only socking half a star for that.

Overall:
It really held up after a reread and I fell in love with the plot, characters, and relationships all over again. Would recommend and I want to read some of Dickeys newer works now to see how he's improved as a writer.

“I was too deep into our second groove, had gotten way too bold for my own good, pulled my gold sundress over my head and stripped booty-naked so I could get the full effect of the ocean breeze molesting and caressing my sweaty body while [he] molested and caressed me." (ch. 50)

A great read

A real page turner and great storyline. In some instances, I could even feel the raw emotions of the characters. I really enjoyed reading this book and highly recommend it.

Originally read it 20 years ago...revisiting it gave a nice solace upon his passing. The book has aged well and isn’t nearly as cringeworthy as some of my other early 2000s reads.
