Grabbed this during July on Amazon First Reads. I was excited by this fantasy premise initially, but had a very hard time getting through the first almost 60% of the book. I probably should have DNF…but I was juuust interested enough to continue. There world building was very hard to follow for me, maybe my imagination just couldn’t get the imagery right but I never was able to really picture what Cagmar looked like very well. Ultimately, I’m glad I finished because I generally liked the story, but definitely not my first pick and not something I would recommend to others.

This book had some really amazing worldbuilding that suffered a bit because the focus was so thoroughly on the narrator. I felt like most of the rest of the characters weren’t really fleshed out, including the love interest. This was good, but I really expected to like it more than I did.

The first half of the book is slow but moves at a better pace. I appreciate the complicated relationships and that there aren't easy resolutions to problems or differences. Relationship building is more subtle but sitting for the systems in the book. Honestly could have been give less build up and more time for the events in the second half. I am left wanting more story, another book would be welcome - especially if focused on what happens next with Lark and Azmar.

I just could not get up the feels to care. The main character was so bland and uninteresting.
