I gave this book a 2 stars for a few reasons. The first is that I didn’t like how S.E Hinton describe her characters and how we meet them. I felt as if it was cliché for there to be two rival gangs, the good and the bad and we’re rooting for the bad. I may say and I wanted the good to win and and I think Hinton wanted the bad to win and I was rooting for the good because she had put this like hateful thought in our mind and I didn’t like that. I also don’t like how fast the Darry’s perspective on Pony boy’s changed almost like in a heartbeat I wish you would’ve been more slow going in and not as quick. I feel like a lot of things happen at the beginning the ball and then it slow down at the end where are usually it’s lower the beginning and fast to me and I wish I would’ve been reversed.

I’m so glad I reread this, I have an entirely new perspective than 4 or 5 years ago when I first read it.

This was a book depicting gangs in the 60s in Oklahoma, the existence of social classes and the violence that comes along with it. At the heart of it all, we are all the same, aren't we, why do we resort to violence just for the sake of violence? That was the sort of message that I got from reading this book and I loved the brotherly interactions between Ponyboy, Soda and Darry.

I was reading this in spurts and finally sat and finished the second half today, which was much more engaging. This book reminds me a little bit of West Side Story (a lot of similar slang, themes, etc.). I liked that it wasn't centered on a romance. It's not only a great coming of age story, but has timeless themes and well developed characters given how short this is. This was really good.
