A cute idea but conceptually a little too meta for little kids to really get a good grasp of.

The most (only?) meta children's picture book I've ever read. LOVE Santat and Willems!

There's a bunch of Elephant and Piggie read alikes, but so far, this one is the best one I've found.

this book is SO META, and I love it!! definitely a case of wanting the grown up readers to have as much fun with the story as the kiddos being read to!

I love Dan Santat, but somehow these illustrations are really off-putting to me. Also, my four-year-old loves E&P and didn't really like this -- she was just confused. I think the right audience for this may be like 6+ readers who have graduated from E&P.

I didn’t love this, perhaps because I haven’t read the previous five books.

For: Elephant and Piggie fans; readers looking for a book with humor and meta elements.
Possible red flags: despair.

Part of Mo Wllems's Elephant and Piggies Like Reading series, author Dan Santat has two almost clones of Elephant and Piggies. The art is more realistic, leading to the uncanny valley element.

I love Elephant and Piggie and found this fun. While it may take a minute to get some younger readers to recognize that Harold and Hog are different from Elephant and Piggie, this book is sure to get laughs. I also appreciated the twist at the end, where Harold and Hog AND the readers learn that it's okay if you don't fit into what others think you should.
